We have missionaries who are the financial secretaries for the mission. I often marvel at the responsibility they carry at such a young age. Even so, sometimes their young age becomes apparent when we have to remind them that they, again, left the safe open the night before. I finally made a big sign, both in English and in Spanish, and put it right next to the door to their office asking, “Did you lock the safe?” We finally had to bring it to the President’s attention this week since they keep forgetting. It’s such an important issue because the cash box is kept there and all the passports of the missionaries. If any of the passports were to be taken it would not only be hard to replace and very expensive but they are worth several thousand dollars on the black market. Sister Kaneen even came to their office one day when they were gone and found the cash box sitting out. It’s just going to take a conscience effort to make it a habit to make sure it’s locked when they aren’t in the office.
I have been helping Sister Ghent to prepare the video for those missionaries who will be leaving from both missions on August 13th. We have had them send in some of their favorite pictures and Sister Ghent had some to use. We are using the Microsoft Movie Maker and setting it to music. It is turning out very nice and I think the missionaries will enjoy it. There are a total of twenty-two leaving, fourteen from the Quito North mission and eight from the Quito mission. Since these missionaries started from the Quito mission and are now leaving from both missions we are having a combined farewell dinner at the Colon chapel. This will be the last time for this to happen. After this transfer day the Quito North mission will be two weeks after the Quito mission’s transfer day.
We had a staff meeting on Friday and were able to come to some solutions to some problems we have been having, the unlocked safe being one of them. It is good to be able to work together as we see those things that need to be done to improve the processes needed for the benefit of the missionaries. We are working with some great young men and I continue to marvel at their maturity, wisdom and insight.
We are feeling God’s hand in our family’s lives this week. We had one granddaughter who narrowly missed being killed. She was at her maternal grandparent’s home and opened the door to a grandfather clock made by her 2 great-grandfather, which caused it to tip over. By the grace of God she was not standing directly in front of it or she most likely would have been killed. Angels were attending her as her parents were serving in the temple.

We are also praying and ask for your prayers in behalf of our five year old grandson. He started having seizures on Friday for no apparent reason and is now at Primary Children’s Hospital in a medically induced coma as they try to find the cause and solution to his problem. As of today he is improving. His temperature has dropped below 100, his brain activity is increasing and he is responding to the medication as expected. But his prognosis is not good. We may never have our sweet, life loving Matthew back again. We know that whatever happens will be God’s will and his family will be blessed with peace and strength to deal with the challenges they are facing. It is such a blessing that they are able to benefit from the resources at Primary Children’s Hospital. Heather, his mother , has shared how the Lord is sustaining and strengthening her though this experience. We know that these refining experiences are for our growth and God will strengthen our family through them. It’s hard to not be able to be with them to help but I know that the best place for us now is to serve the Lord and his blessings will continue to be poured out for our family as we serve.
